Your employee handbook is not a file-and-forget document.
On January 1, 2027, a new round of California laws takes effect, and they reach into core handbook policies: leave, workplace monitoring, repayment terms, meal breaks, and layoff notices.
If your handbook still describes the 2026 rules, that is the version your managers will follow, and the version your employees signed for. The gap between the book and the law is where claims start.
November is the time to close it: compare the book against the new laws, rewrite what changed, and roll it out with a fresh acknowledgment from every employee.
This is the first in a short Friday series on handbook updates. Next week: the specific policies that change on January 1, 2027.
